My child is in his fourth year of high school, but is a few credits short of graduating with his class this spring. He can complete the necessary course work this summer to graduate, but we both feel that another year of participating on the basketball team would give him a better chance at a college basketball scholarship. Is this okay?

No. High School students have four consecutive years or eight semesters of eligibility for participation in a VPA-sanctioned sport or activity, starting from the date they enroll as a freshman. A waiver procedure is in place for undue hardship – such as illness or other justifiable emergency beyond the control of the school, the student or his/her parents.

I want to play soccer this fall, but I turned 19 in June because I was held back in school in the fourth grade. Can I still play my senior year?

Students who have attained the age of 19 prior to August 1 shall be ineligible for all VPA-sanctioned activities. A waiver procedure is in place for undue hardship – such as illness or other justifiable emergency beyond the control of the school, the student or his/her parents.
