American Sign Language

Advisor

Melissa Kate Adams

The goal of the American Sign Language Club is to increase interest of students and staff who would like to learn how to better communicate with people who are Deaf, hard of hearing, or have difficulties with the English language. ASL is a visual language and is the third most -used language in the U.S. today. Members of the club would learn how the Deaf Culture orginated, learn to analyze Deaf expressions and emotions, learn keys to identify the clarity of the message being conveyed, and learn how the Deaf interact with each other compared to those that are hearing. Anoither goal would be to fundraise money for Deaf organizations and to participate in trips or events.

Beekeeping has been a hobby of mine for over 25 years and many students find beekeeping fascinating. Members of the BEEKEEPING CLUB will meet not only to become knowledgeable and confident beekeepers, they will be given an opportunity to: make candles, visit local apiaries, study successful queen rearing, harvest/extract/bottle honey, design and create labels and brochures, study the physical properties and chemical composition of honey and beeswax, design a method to locate a wild honeybee colony, and design experiments to study honeybee structure/function and how honeybees live, work, and communicate with each other.

Computer Gamers Club

Advisor

Jennifer Welles

We meet Thursday after school in room 215 - generally we move to the upper library table or the Student Center; once a month we go to the Gamers' Grotto. The club is an opportunity for students with like interests (focussed on computers and gaming) to socialize and interact inside and outside of the digital world. Some of the students are special needs and have challenges with social interaction. However, the computer forum provides a common element which gives the students opportunities to strengthen their skills.

The drama club produces plays and musicals at MAU. In the past we have done "Oliver," "The Music Man," "Noises Off," "Romeo & Juliet", Beauty and the Beast, The Sound of Music, Dracula and many more. All students are welcome and encouraged to audition for all productions. In addition, club members build the sets, costumes, props and do the lighting and sound for all the plays. At the end of the year, the Drama Club takes a trip to NYC to see a production on Broadway. Interested students should contact Tim Foley (Room 064c by the CDC School Store 447-022, Ext. 470, tfoley@svcdc.org) or Lynn Sweet (Rm. 229, 447-7511 ext. 229 lsweet@svsu.org)

French Club

Advisor

Paul Mackin

The French Exchange is a 30-year cross-cultural program between Mt. Anthony Union High School and Fenelon High School in La Rochelle, France. Every two years a group of Mt. Anthony students travels to France usually during either February or April vacation, and hosts a similar group of French students traveling from Fenelon in either the fall or spring. Our students live with French students and their families and see the sites around La Rochelle, a port city with hundreds of years of history. Students experience French family life, French food and have the opportunity to speak French on a daily basis. When hosting the French students they live in our homes with our students and experience a similar American life, seeing sites of interest in and around Bennington. Every trip includes a visit to Paris, seeing museums like the Louvre and historic sites like Versailles, the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower.

Future Teacher's Club (Not running in 2012)

Advisor

Ashley Raspuzzi

The purpose of the MAU Future Teachers' Association is to provide students with opportunities to explore teaching as a career option. Students will gain a realistic understanding of the nature of education and the role of the teacher as they read articles and books addressing various topics of interest to educators. The focus of reading and discussion will include classroom management, lesson planning, developmentally appropriate practices, and the future of education in the 21st century, among other areas of interest. Students will also learn about teaching programs in colleges and opportunities for teaching in a variety of settings. Surfing teacher and educational Websites, engaging in conversations with educator-including those from public, private, and parochial schools, as well as from institutions of higher education-and visiting classrooms and schools in the area will further facilitate a clear and connected understanding of the teaching profession.
